Fristads has developed a new environmental standard and introduced Fristads Green - the world's first environmentally declared clothing collection. Fristads' founder, John Magnuson, opened a workwear manufacturing plant in the small village of Fristad in 1925. At a time when industrialisation was booming and workwear did not yet exist in Sweden, Magnuson had recognised the potential of this untapped market. In 1929, Fristads was the first company in Sweden to produce jeans, and it was also the first company to offer a whole range of workwear, including trousers, dungarees, overalls, shirts and coats.

Fristads has since become part of the Hultafors Group, together with its sister brands Kansas in Denmark and Leijona in Finland.
